Net Positive Labs contributed to the design and delivery of a Sustainability Leadership Lab convened by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), part of the University of Cambridge.

Working alongside CISL faculty, we supported curriculum design and teaching for a two-day programme bringing together more than 30 international executives. The lab explored how systems thinking and sustainability strategy can help leaders navigate complex organisational and environmental challenges.

Context

The Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership works globally with business leaders, policymakers, and academics to develop leadership capabilities for addressing complex sustainability challenges.

Within this mission, CISL convenes Sustainability Leadership Labs: intensive executive learning environments designed to bring together practitioners, faculty, and experts to explore emerging sustainability challenges and leadership approaches.

Net Positive Labs was invited to contribute to one of these labs, supporting curriculum design and teaching as part of a collaborative programme aimed at strengthening systems thinking capabilities among senior leaders.

The Challenge

Many organisations now recognise sustainability as a strategic priority, yet leaders often struggle to translate ambition into coherent action.

Sustainability initiatives frequently remain fragmented, addressing individual issues without fully understanding the broader systems in which organisations operate. This limits the ability to address interconnected challenges such as climate change, resource constraints, and complex supply chains.

The objective of the lab was therefore to help participants develop a systems perspective on sustainability challenges while identifying practical ways to apply these insights within their organisations.

The programme also needed to move beyond traditional lecture formats and create an environment that encouraged reflection, practical exploration, and peer exchange among experienced leaders.

Our Approach

Net Positive Labs contributed to the design and delivery of the lab as part of the wider faculty and practitioner team.

Working with CISL programme leaders, we supported the development of the curriculum and learning structure. The programme combined conceptual frameworks with applied exercises to help participants explore how systems thinking can inform sustainability strategy and organisational transformation.

Through structured discussions and practical exercises, participants examined how environmental, economic, and organisational dynamics interact within complex systems, and how leadership decisions can influence these relationships.

The programme emphasised peer learning and cross-industry dialogue, bringing together executives from different sectors and geographies to exchange experiences and reflect on how sustainability challenges manifest within their organisations.

The Outcome

The lab equipped participating executives with practical frameworks for analysing sustainability challenges through a systems perspective.

Participants gained new insights into how strategic decisions interact with wider systems dynamics and explored ways to identify leverage points for organisational change.

By contributing to the design and delivery of the programme, Net Positive Labs supported the development of leaders better equipped to navigate complexity and drive sustainability transitions within their organisations.
