Spring Activator is one of Canada’s leading platforms supporting early-stage entrepreneurs working on solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Through accelerators, founder support programmes, and ecosystem initiatives, Spring helps impact-driven startups grow and connect with capital, partners, and international markets.

As the global impact investment ecosystem continues to expand, international connections are becoming increasingly important for early-stage companies. European investors have become particularly active in sectors such as climate technology, digital health, and sustainable food systems, often providing not only capital but also strategic networks and market access.

For Canadian startups, Europe represents both a significant investment market and an opportunity to build international partnerships. At the same time, navigating the European venture landscape can be complex due to the diversity of investor types, geographies, and sector specialisations.

Against this backdrop, Spring sought to develop a clearer view of which European investors are most relevant for early-stage Canadian impact startups.

Context

Europe hosts a rapidly growing ecosystem of venture capital funds focused on sustainability and impact. However, identifying investors who are both sector-aligned and open to cross-border investment requires careful analysis.

For early-stage founders, the challenge is not simply identifying investors — but identifying the right investors.

Key questions included:

• Which European funds actively invest at Pre-Seed to Series A stages?
• Which investors show consistent interest in Climate, Healthcare, and Food Systems innovation?
• Which funds demonstrate a track record of cross-border investment, including in North American startups?

Answering these questions would allow Spring to better connect Canadian founders with investors capable of supporting their growth.

The Approach

To help Spring connect Canadian founders with the most relevant European investors, Net Positive Labs developed a structured view of the early-stage impact investment landscape across Europe.

The focus was on identifying funds actively investing in sectors aligned with Spring’s priorities — Climate, Healthcare, and Food Systems — and with demonstrated openness to supporting companies beyond their domestic markets.

The mapping concentrated on key venture ecosystems including the United Kingdom, the Nordics, the Netherlands, Spain, and emerging investment hubs in Eastern Europe.

Rather than compiling a broad directory of investors, the objective was to identify those most relevant for Spring’s network — investors with the right stage focus, sector alignment, and recent investment activity, as well as a track record of cross-border investment, including exposure to North American startups.

This resulted in a curated and prioritised investor landscape, enabling Spring to engage with European funds most likely to support the international growth of Canadian impact ventures.

The Outcome

The project provided Spring with a structured view of European investors most relevant for early-stage Canadian impact startups.

Rather than a broad overview of the venture capital market, the analysis identified a prioritised set of European funds suitable for direct engagement, focusing on investors aligned with Spring’s priority sectors — Climate, Healthcare, and Food Systems — and with demonstrated experience investing across borders.

This enabled Spring to more effectively connect Canadian founders with investors capable of supporting their international growth.

The work therefore delivered:

  • a clear view of European early-stage investors most relevant to Spring’s startup community
  • a prioritised set of investors suitable for direct engagement
  • insight into funds with demonstrated cross-border investment activity, including exposure to North American startups
  • a stronger foundation for building relationships between Canadian impact ventures and European capital

Together, these insights support Spring’s broader objective of strengthening transatlantic collaboration and accelerating the growth of Canadian impact innovation.

Strengthening Transatlantic Impact Innovation

International capital and partnerships play an important role in scaling early-stage innovation.

By supporting this initiative, Net Positive Labs contributed to Spring’s efforts to strengthen connections between Canadian startups and European investors — helping impact ventures access new sources of capital and international growth opportunities.
